Construct Your Future in Bordon

Opened in September 2017, our Future Skills Centre in Bordon offers a comprehensive range of construction courses designed to meet the needs of employers in the construction industry.

The project, commissioned by Hampshire County Council, is part of the regeneration of Whitehill and Bordon and the £3.8million facility gives you the opportunity to learn a trade, gain professional qualifications through our links with Southampton Solent University or get the skills needed for a career in the construction industry.

Future Pathways

The Future Pathways programme will have timetabled activities for about 18 hours each week during term time. This will include maths, IT and English classes, tutorial time and around 5 hours each week in your chosen technical skill area. Your timetable will also include work experience hours and employability activities; The Future Skills Centre will support you in finding an appropriate placement.

You will get to choose from the following technical skill areas:

  • Carpentry
  • Bricklaying
  • Plumbing
  • Electrical

We are in the process of setting up a two-week programme, which will include a week's residential, during the Easter holiday (April 2017), working in partnership with the NCS (National Citizen Service).  This will be compulsory for all Future Pathways students to complete.  It will cost £50. Level 2 CSkills Diploma in Brickwork

This course will develop the skills learnt on the Level 1 course whilst introducing topics such as Groundworks and Working Platforms.

You must have completed the Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying, have a strong recommendation from your tutor and a good attendance record.

Level 2 CSkills Diploma in Building Maintenance

If you’re considering a career in building maintenance and refurbishment and are ready to start developing your skills, then this course is perfect course for you.

This course will provide you with the practical skills as well as the knowledge and understanding of construction to allow you to pursue a career in this industry. You will learn the basics of how buildings are constructed and how to recognise the common defects in different parts of a building. You will be able to treat and repair these defects to industry standards.

 

This course includes:

  • Interpret working drawings to carry out building repairs
  • Building Methods, how buildings are built and the regulations governing them
  • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
  • Carpentry trade repairs
  • Brick and masonry trade repairs
  • Plastering trade repairs
  • Painting and decorating repairs
  • Plumbing trade repairs
  • Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
  • Understanding construction technology
  • Developing customer relationships
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries

Level 2 CSkills Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

This course is delivered on 3 days a week between 10am and 4pm (different days may be available).

The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

  • Move and handle resources
  • Contribute to work efficiency
  • Access equipment
  • Carcassing
  • First fix before plasterwork
  • Second fix after plasterwork
  • Power tools
  • Health and Safety

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment

On this level 3 course you will receive instruction, guidance and encouragement to practise and develop the skills necessary to achieve the award.

The course covers the following units:

  • Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Science and Materials in Construction and the Built Environment

There may be an opportunity to undertake additional qualifications built into the course that will be assessed by either continuous assessment, a completed portfolio or an end test.

Level 3 CSkills Diploma in Site Carpentry and Joinery

This course is designed for those wishing to progress from the Level 2 qualification in order to further develop their knowledge and skills in wood occupations and the construction industry.  It will introduce the skills required for on-site project management.
