Description

This course has been designed specifically for mature students who have some vocational experience but do not have the relevant qualifications for entry to higher education. Students attend college four days a week between the hours of 9.30-3.30.

The course will provide the necessary skills and knowledge to progress on to higher education in order to pursue a career in one of the following areas:
- Nursing
- Midwifery
- Physiotherapy
- Podiatry
- Psychology
- Biomedical Science
- Operating Theatre Practitioner
- Paramedic Science
- other careers in health

Course Content

Units will include:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Applied science
- Psychology applied to health
- Health and society
- Communication and presentation skills

The lesson style is relaxed and informal with an emphasis on student participation. Learners will be involved in discussions, seminars, individual and group research, they will be assigned a personal tutor who will support them with their studies and personal development. Students will need good time management skills as assessment of the course is on an ongoing basis. There will be assignment tasks and short tests throughout the course, and therefore no end of course examinations. You will be expected to meet all deadlines for assignment submission unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Attendance of 100% is necessary in order to complete the course.

Method of Assessment

Assessment is by continuous coursework and short tests.

Functional Skills

All students will participate in timetabled sessions designed to enhance skills in English and Maths. ICT skills may also be offered as an alternative if these skills are more appropriate to the programme of study. Students will receive separate certificates on successful completion of the programme.

There may be an opportunity to undertake additional qualifications built into the course that will be assessed by either continuous assessment, a completed portfolio or an end test.

Progression

The majority of students progress into higher education courses, for example BA Degrees, Foundation Degrees and Higher National Diplomas within a wide range of health care disciplines. In order to progress into health-related professions at higher education level it would be advisable for students to undertake relevant work experience in their own time.

Students will be required to purchase general stationery items together with a USB memory stick.

Course Fees

Tuition and registration fees are free for students aged 16-18 as at 31 August 2010 for the course period, students aged 19+ as at 31 August 2010 will be required to pay the fees as stated. The tuition fee is payable for each year of study, all fees are due at enrolment. Costs may vary for international students, please ask for details.
