Description
This nationally recognised qualification is designed to provide learners over 19 with the skills and confidence required for successful application to Higher Education programmes.
The course has been designed to support mature students especially those returning to study after a long absence.
The course enables students to approach and investigate various disciplines within art, design and communication in an
individual and fulfilling way. Experimentation through drawing, painting, textiles, three-dimensional design, photography
and printmaking are all encouraged, the course will develop practical, creative skills and an understanding of historical
and contextual studies. Critical thinking, reflective practice and study skills are integrated throughout, equipping learners with the skills required for academic and vocational progression to Higher Education. Experienced specialist staff working with students in fully equipped studios provides the necessary environment to develop creativity to the full.
Course Content
The course is modular in structure, and divided into three stages.
Stage one (introductory studies):
• drawing development
• materials exploration
• sculpture – non-traditional materials
• design project
• the origins of modern art (research report)
• developing skills for study and learning
• assessment
• reflection on learning
Stage two (specialisation):
• painting – mixed media
• focused life drawing
• sculpture – deconstruction and abstraction (optional)
• printmaking (optional)
• using computers in the arts (optional)
• communication and presentation skills
• review and planning for the future
• assessment
• reflection on learning
Stage three (final project):
• art and design exhibition
• final project
• assessment
• reflection on learning
• progression
Study skills are integrated into the course. Elements of the course require self-managed study and learners are encouraged to develop skills and competencies through work-based learning. To successfully complete the course students will need to dedicate time to independent study in addition to timetabled study in College.
Attendance of 100% is necessary in order to complete the course.
Method of Assessment
The course is continuously assessed through practical and written assignments. Feedback through group critiques and peer reviews are an integral part of the course.
Functional Skills
Opportunities exist within the college to supplement basic qualifications in English, Mathematics and ICT.
Other Studies (enhancement)
A full enrichment programme is available to all students.
Other Activities
Visits and trips outside of the college play an important part of the course (this may include a residential) cost will be approx £50, and external speakers may be included in the programme.
Progression
The majority of students progress into higher education courses (the preferred route for a career in art and design), for example BA degrees, Foundation Degrees and Higher National Diplomas within a wide range of creative fields.
Equipment
Students will be required to purchase essential equipment and materials directly from an approved college supplier and the approximate cost is £60. Students may also need to purchase additional materials depending on their area of interest eg photo paper, fabric etc.
Consumable Items
Students will be required to purchase general stationery items in addition to general art consumables.
Course Fees
Tuition and registration fees are free for students aged 16-18 as at 31 August 2010 for the course period, students aged 19+ as at 31 August 2010 will be required to pay the fees as stated. The tuition fee is payable for each year of study, all fees are due at enrolment. Costs may vary for international students, please ask for details.
