Student support

BCOT aims to ensure that all students enjoy their time at the college and gain the most from their educational experience. For these reasons, BCOT prides itself on its student support facilities.

A learning environment – tailored to your needs

The Learning Resources Centre (LRC) is open to all students and provides the perfect environment for both individual and group learning. The LRC offers many sources of information and materials including PCs with high-speed internet connections and the LRC’s collection of books, newspapers, journals and company reports. Photocopying and presentation equipment is also available and specialist on-line databases can be accessed from home as well as college.

Accommodation

Our Student Welfare Manager has a list of local accommodation in properties close to the college campus. Prices range from £60 to £80 per week, depending on your preference for single, double or shared accommodation. Careers advice

BCOT’s careers advice service is there to help all students with their future job prospects. It provides help in writing andstructuring CVs and job applications and assists students in preparing for interviews to ensure they get the right job. Futureoptions and opportunities can be discussed and the latest computerised careers’ advice and guidance software packages areavailable for all students’ use. Counselling

BCOT cares about the well-being of each of its students and understands the pressure that may accompany studying for your qualification. For these reasons, we provide a free, confidential counselling service. If you have any worries or issues of any nature, you can talk to a member of our supportive counselling team. All reasonable adjustments will be made so that students, and potential students, with any disability, are not disadvantaged.

If you have a disability, please let the college know what you require to assist you. On applying to BCOT, the application form enables you to provide information about any disability and/or support you may need. If you wish for this information to be kept confidential, please state this. Any concerns you may have can be discussed in private, and we will ensure that confidentiality about the nature and extent of your disability is preserved. You may wish to apply for a DSA (Disabled Students Allowance). You should do this several weeks before your course starts. Please ask for information about how to do this. Health

BCOT has its own health point staffed by a qualified nurse as well as a team of first-aiders. A family planning nurse is also available for confidential appointments from 12–2pm on Thursdays. All students living away from home are encouraged to register with a doctor and dentist within the local area.

Returning to study

At BCOT we welcome applications from people who wish to return to study after a period of absence. Many of our higher education courses are designed with the mature student in mind. They are suitable for people who want a career break, or who are thinking about changing their career or are aiming for higher qualifications in their current work in order to improve their career prospects. Our staff understand the difficulties that mature students may have to face, but with their experience, they are well equipped to support you. We find that mature students are usually well motivated and get good results.

The Student Union

All BCOT students are members of the Student Union and the National Union of Students (NUS). Involvement in the Student Union is a great feature of higher education study. You can choose to involve yourself in organising events which is a great way to meet people and make new friends. Working and achieving together our personal tutors are available to discuss any issues, course details or general work enquiries, on a one-to-one basis. Our staff have industrial and professional experience, giving them an enthusiasm for their specialist subject and in depth knowledge with which to guide their students.
