Before your application can be processed you will be required to have the IELTS test or equivalent in English. The test can be taken in any country and covers speaking, listening, writing and understanding the English language.
Proof of your results will need to be sent with your application form to enable us to consider your application. The test results must be officially stamped by the organisation who administered the test. To study at Basingstoke College of Technology you will need to have an IELTS score of at least 5.5.

| 9 | Expert User | Fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent, with complete understanding. |
| 8 | Very Good User | Fully operational command of the language with only occasionally unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies, misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well. |
| 7 | Good User | Operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning. |
| 6 | Competent User | Generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings, can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations. |
| 5 | Modest User | Partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field. |
| 4 | Limited User | Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Frequent problems in understanding and expression, is not able to use complex language. |
| 3 | Extremely Limited User | Only general meaning conveyed and understood in very familiar situations. Frequent breakdowns in communication occur. |
| 2 | Intermittent User | No real communication is possible except for the most basic information using isolated words in short formulae in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. Great difficulty understanding spoken and written English. |
| 1 | Non-User | Essentially no ability to use the language beyond a few isolated words. |
The British Council currently offers IELTS at 190 centres worldwide. IELTS study/specimen materials and preparation courses are available at many British Council offices. You can also purchase IELTS specimen materials from your nearest test centre or direct from UCLES.
