The Student Union is made up of a group of learners who are elected once a year. They meet regularly as a group and also with senior management to ensure that the learner voice and feedback is heard and actively represented within the college. There is a Student Union President and coordinators for social activities and others. They arrange different charity events and activities for students to take part in as well as co-ordinate societies, sports days, end of year celebrations and trips.

Once enrolled, all students become members of the BCoT SU and this is affiliated with the NUS (National Union of Students). BCoT representatives regularly attend outside conferences and events with other College Student Unions to ensure that they are knowledgeable on student-led movements and campaigns.

The NUS also offer a student discount card which you can purchase online, this will save you money on a range of products including clothes, food, music and travel.

General Information

The Student Union is made up of elected members from annual elections usually held in the Spring. We have an Executive Committee who uses a Learner Parliament and Course Rep system to feed the learners' views into their meetings with top level staff and teachers. The Student Union has achieved things such as changing the price of food in the refectory, to gaining funding for better chill-out spaces in the College.

SU Elections

From about January each year we start looking for promising learners who would be interested in putting themselves forward as candidates for the SU Committee posts available in the coming academic year.

As the Student Union continues to grow and develop we look for students who want to actively take part in college life and get involved in shaping the student experience. We would love to be able to attract various different students from all levels and abilities to the Executive Committee, as this ensures that the committees' decisions reflect the needs and wants of our students.

There are usually about 5-6 positions available, but this does change slightly each year as the SU decides what is important.

If you - or someone you know - might be interested in standing for the SU Committee, please speak to the Learner Engagement Coordinator.

Freshers' Fair

At the beginning of a new academic year, the Student Union holds a Freshers' Fair to welcome new students to the college.  This is an opportunity for the various clubs and societies - as well as outside organisations - to get new students involved with them.

At a recent Freshers' Fair we had representatives from Nandos, AA, Subway, Superdry, Basingstoke Sports Centre, BVS Youth Team, Stagecoach, Naomi House and Jacks Place, Hampshire FA, Bernardos, Solent NHS, Time to Change, Step by Step, Basingstoke Wolverines, the Aquadrome, Absolute Leisure, NCS and then lots of in-house stands and stalls for students to sign up to activities and get more information as to what's happening in the College in the coming year.
