BCOT's Plans

A sustainable building

The building is being designed to be as sustainable as possible, using many environmentally sound
energy sources and principles. For example, a natural ventilation system will be employed which
draws cool air into the building through vents, keeping the building at a comfortable temperature. As
the air heats and rises through the building the warm air will be released through stacks on the roof.

These aspirations and principles are absolutely appropriate for such a major community development,
with signifi cant central Government investment. The Kingsclere Road site also offers much better
potential to get this element of design ‘right’, compared to re-developing the existing campuses.

Car parking and transport

The proposed site for the new BCOT campus is easily accessible from the town centre. The College will
be developing a Green Travel Plan to support the movement of people and vehicles around the area.

Car parking will be provided by the College via access on Pelton Road, but the College will be
encouraging students and staff to use public transport, making best use of the good bus and train links
from Basingstoke town centre and the access routes created by the re-development of the whole site.
Targets will be set within the Green Travel Plan.

The emerging design for the building includes surface and “undercroft” parking, which would minimise
the potential for car parking to dominate the landscape.

Delivery access to the College will be from the north (away from Chapel Hill and the town centre), and
vehicles will enter the College site via Pelton Road, away from the main pedestrian entrances.
