BCoT Industry Placement frequently asked questions
Q: Will students get help with industry placements?A: Yes - all students have an Industry Placement Co-ordinator for their area who can support them with the industry placement process.
Q: Is it the responsibility of the student to arrange the placement?A: We encourage all students to take ownership of finding their own industry placement which includes researching and contacting employers, but we will support students who find this process difficult.
Q: Do parents need to find a placement for their child?A: Whilst some parents help their child with this, we do encourage the young person to take on this responsibility if possible.

Q: Do students have to do their placement on the placement day that is allocated on their timetable? A: All students have an allocated placement day. If this doesn’t work for an employer, then the student should discuss this with their IP Co-ordinator to see if there is flexibility in moving this for the duration of the placement.
Q: Does the placement have to be undertaken in the same place or can a variety of employers be used?A: You can have industry placements with more than one employer.
Q: Do part-time jobs count?A: Part-time jobs can count towards IP hours if they are linked to the vocational area that the student is studying, and there is a learning objective agreed with the student and employer which is different to the student’s normal job role.
Q: When should the placement start?A: Placements can start at any time throughout the academic year.
Q: What date does the placement have to be completed by?A: Placements for the current academic year have to be completed by 31st July.
Q: What happens if you can’t find a placement?A: The student should contact their IP Co-ordinator for advice and support.
Q: Are IP hours different for 19+ ages?A: Industry Placements are not compulsory for those aged 19+ students.
Q: Will industry placement experience benefit me for university?A: Yes - this is something you can include to demonstrate your skills and experience on your personal statement for university.
Q: Is there information available to benefit employers if they take a placement?A: Yes - we have a leaflet we send to employers who would like to offer placements, giving examples of how taking on an industry placement student can benefit the employer.
The Parent Portal allows parents/guardians of our students to view reports, timetables, attendance, progress, results, qualifications and comments from our teaching staff.

To report a student absence, please call 01256 306321, you can also call 01256 354141 and either key extension 6321 or wait for the option list. If the student is 16-18, we ask the next-of-kin to phone in with the student's full name, student number and course they are studying. Please also call this line if you are self-isolating.
