Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) has ranked among the top UK colleges in the National Achievement Rates Tables issued by the government last week. The College was ranked number 3 in the country for level 3 achievement on higher level apprenticeship programmes; in the top 12% of colleges nationally for timely achievement of apprenticeships and impressively in the top 13% of colleges for achievement at Level 3 for 16-18 year olds ranking BCoT alongside the top colleges in the area for this measure.
The results demonstrate how the College’s investment in high standards of teaching and learning across all its programmes is bearing fruit. Principal Anthony Bravo said: “What an exceptional set of performance figures for BCoT. Not only does this validate our approach but also ranks us among the best colleges in the country something I am proud we can offer the community in Basingstoke.”
He continued: “We are one of the largest providers of Apprenticeship training in the region working with large numbers of employers across all industry sectors. We are set to see a huge increase in the number of people taking an apprenticeship – from school leavers to those already in industry and employers now have the tangible assurance they will be working with one of the best providers in the area.”
The results for Level 3 achievement among 16-18 year-olds were particularly notable with BCoT securing an 89% achievement rate which is 4.2% above the national average for FE Colleges and Tertiary providers. Deputy Principal for Curriculum Mark Hillman added: “Our Level 3 performance, equivalent to A levels, is particularly impressive and shows the exceptionally high standards at BCoT in these vocational subjects. Many parents assume the vocational option is of less value than A levels, but we can see the exponential growth in young people who immerse themselves in subjects they love. They get a head start at university from studying their subject in more depth and they have highly developed research and self-study skills. Our results are testament to this.”
Mark who joined BCoT earlier this year is a champion of vocational education and continued: “Education at BCoT enables our students to go on to prestigious universities on completion of their Level 3 programme. These include Russell Group universities such as the University of Leeds, King’s College London, the University of Southampton to name a few, studying degrees as diverse as Biomedical Science, Automotive Engineering, Radiography and Politics. I want parents to understand there is real choice for school leavers out there and they can be assured of extremely high standards at BCoT.”
The achievement tables cover all levels of programme and qualification including courses for adults in the over 19 age range. BCoT once again ranked highly with achievement putting them in the top 33% of colleges in the country. Achievement on Level 2 functional skills was in the top 7% nationally. This is particularly impressive as these programmes help young people and adults to achieve a minimum of level 2 in English and Maths (GCSE equivalent), which is an important government target.
