Student wellbeing at the heart of ‘My Future Week’

Week-long event encourages students to talk about their future careers, mental health and wellbeing.

Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) students recently took part in a week-long event designed to encourage them to talk about their future careers, health and wellbeing.

‘My Future Week’, which was organised by BCoT’s Careers Team Leader, provided students with details of the universities and career opportunities that are available across the south of England, and gave them the chance to step away from their studies to discuss their health and wellbeing.

During the first two days, students met representatives from 12 different universities, including Bournemouth University and University of Southampton, and attended presentations that provided information on applying for university, writing a personal statement, and what life is like at university.

Later in the week a range of health organisations were invited into in the college, and a number of workshops were hosted by nutritionist experts Food Is Life and breast cancer awareness charity, Coppafeel. Inspirational speaker Anthony Bennett also gave a number of motivational speeches, which were well attended by both staff and students.

My Future Week concluded with a two-day job fair. Local employers from a wide range of industries came in to talk to the students and discuss their latest vacancies and opportunities.

Anthony Bravo, Principal of BCoT, said: “With an onsite counselling service, careers team, nurse and Retention and Progression Tutors, the health and wellbeing of our students is really important to us.

This supports our mission to drive economic growth and prosperity in Basingstoke and the wider region. 98.4% of our students progress to university, an apprenticeship or enter the world of work after completing their studies with us, and I am sure this fantastic event has inspired and motivated more of our current students to do the same.”

Applications to study at BCoT this September are still open. To discover BCoT’s wide range of courses and to apply, visit bcot.ac.uk.
