This established and highly respected one-year Art Foundation course has a broad programme allowing you to gradually specialise in your chosen area, preparing you for higher-level study at the university of your choice.
You will be extended beyond your A-level/Level 3 studies towards higher-level working practices, preparing you for the demands of university or employment. The course will extend your creative potential and build strategies to allow you to get the most out of university. It is a fast paced experience that will encourage you to develop confidence in your own ideas and build a substantial portfolio of work.
The programme is divided into three stages: 'Exploratory', which includes a broad experimental approach to consolidate your discipline, 'Pathway', and 'Confirmatory' where students will work on a final project in their chosen specialism.
Initially, students follow an intensive period of bridging studies which is centred on drawing and developing research skills. This visual studies programme provides students with enough flexibility to explore their own potential in specific areas of the department and to gradually specialise in their preferred discipline.
During stage two students will develop their visual and practical skills through a range of project based activities in specialist workshops and studios: Painting, Drawing and Sculpture 3D design, Ceramics and Glass, Graphic Design and Digital Processes, Screen Printing, Fashion, Printed Textiles, Knitted and Woven Textiles, Photography and Video.
The practical work is complemented by contextual studies. Theoretical studies provide for a critical understanding of Art and Design and its function in society.
During the course you will go on a residential trip and complete a final project in your chosen discipline, preparing you for employment or university.
The course is continuously assessed through assignments, projects and case studies. Learners will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on their own and in groups.
The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local business wherever possible.
Most students progress onto a Degree or Higher National Diploma course in Art and Design (average 98% per year).
