Access to Higher Education Diploma in Art and Design

Course Overview

This course has been designed specifically for mature students who do not have the relevant qualifications for entry to higher education.

You will attend college four days a week between 9.30 and 3.30.

You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you with studies and personal development.

Good time-management skills are necessary as assessment of the course is on an on-going basis.

There are weekly tutorials where one to ones take place and you set your own targets for the development of specific skills and knowledge, including completion of the UCAS process. All resources, assignments are available on the Google Classrooms for your use and specific resources for eLearning sessions are updated weekly

This course will provide a diagnostic mixed media art and design experience. Learners will enhance or extend materials techniques and processes to build a body of practical work to enable them to apply to HE or potential employers via portfolio interview.

Course Content

This course offers you an exciting opportunity to explore the world of art and design. A multidisciplinary approach will introduce you to both Fine art and design disciplines and allow you to investigate and experiment with a wide range of media and processes. Our extensive workshops will give you the opportunity to experience processes such as painting, printmaking, ceramics, casting and mould making, wood and metal construction along with laser cutting and print, knit and weave.  Within this broad-based course we will offer opportunities in the areas of Fashion, Three dimensional design, Fine art, Graphics and Photography.

Experienced staff will challenge you, via creative projects and problem solving, to generate a portfolio of work ready to take to a potential employer or for an application to University.

The course is designed to appeal to open minded, creative and enthusiastic learners who are looking for both an enjoyable and challenging experience. The team of staff will support you through a  range of projects that will gradually stretch your learning and skills of analysis, critical thinking and reflective, personal practice.

The course consists of 12 units and students will need to pass all 12 in order to achieve the Diploma.

Entry Requirement

GCSE English is essential (grade c or above). 

Candidates may be considered without a grade C or above in maths but are strongly encouraged to check the entry requirements of their chosen University.  There may be the opportunity to take a qualification alongside the Access course.

Candidates will be invited to interview with the course tutor team.


Assessment is completed through short timed tests throughout the year.
