Level 3 OCR Introductory Diploma in Art and Design

Course Overview

Designed for people with less experience in art and design or lower level GCSEs, this one year course will provide the instruction, guidance and encouragement needed to progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma or into employment.

 The course is varied and covers fine art, textiles and fashion, 3D and graphics, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture, 3D design (spatial and product).

You will have access to well-equipped studios with professional machinery and materials. The course is carefully structured to enable you to achieve your potential, culminating in a final major project as part of your progression to Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design or employment.

Course Content

Students will be introduced to a wide range of techniques and learn new processes within Art and Design including, observational drawing, painting, black & white darkroom photography, digital photography, Photoshop, textiles, printmaking, 3D processes,  including wood, metals, plastics and glass, mould making and laser cutting.

This will take place over six units throughout the academic year and will explore a range of Art and Design disciplines before taking more ownership in their final project of the year and selecting which media they would like to progress with.

Project work is supported and inspired by a wide variety of trips to London, Oxford and Portsmouth to exploring art galleries and museums to gain primary research and inspiration.

Students are expected to study for an additional 5-10 hours outside of timetabled hours.

Entry Requirement

You will need GCSE English and maths at grade D/3 or above or Level 1 Functional Skills or successful completion of our Future Pathways course. You must also have a good portfolio of work to show at the interview.

Assessment

Continuous assessment takes place throughout the course through assignments based upon current art and design practice.  All work is produced through coursework and projects. There are no exams.

The course uses practical activities to assess coursework, including peer review, self assessment, presentations, practical activities and exhibitions.
