During Year 1 learners will be introduced to a wide range of techniques and learn new processes including costume, set and prop design and special effects make-up. Alongside this you will complete technical and observational drawing, research skills, design development and studying the requirements of the industry and progression and career opportunities.
Costume Design; you will use our specialist fashion studio to design and create your own garments suitable for a variety of productions and performances.
Set Design; students will design their own sets considering the technical and practical requirements of the design. They will use our 3D workshop and facilities, including our laser cutter, to create scale models of their sets.
Special effects make-up; projects will also cover an introduction into the tools and equipment required for special effects make-up including mould making and prosthetics.
Prop Design; you will learn a range of 3D processes in wood, metals, plastics and glass, mould making and latex that you will apply to a range of props and productions.
In year 2 students will direct their studies towards a more individualised programme choosing to specialise in special effects make-up, costume, prop or set design. With the support of lecturers you will design and manage your own briefs and produce a body of work that will provide you with a focused portfolio for university application or employment.
Additional workshops will take place throughout the year in specialist areas.
Learners are expected to study for an additional 10 - 15 hours outside of timetabled hours.
Continuous assessment takes place throughout the course through assignments. All work is produced through coursework and projects and there are no exams.
The course uses practical activities to assess coursework, including peer review, self assessment, presentations, practical activities and exhibitions.
As the course is equivalent to three A-levels, you will be able to progress to university, an Art Foundation course or into employment.
