Course Overview

CIPD Intermediate Level qualifications offer you the opportunity to build your expertise in HR or L&D. Set at undergraduate level (Level 5 RQF) they will help you to develop your ability to evaluate the effectiveness of HR models and practices and increase your understanding of organisations, whilst also developing your planning, analytical and problem-solving skills. By successfully completing CIPD’s Intermediate Certificate or Diploma qualifications you’ll automatically become an Associate and professional member of the CIPD (Assoc CIPD).

Intermediate qualifications are ideal for those who:

• seek to develop a career in HR management and development

• are working in the field of HR management and development and need to extend their knowledge and skills

• have responsibility for implementing HR policies and strategies

• need to understand the role of HR in the wider organisational and environmental context

Course Content

There are two units to complete to upgrade from the Certificate in Human Resource Management to the Diploma in Human Resource Management:

  • Employment Law
  • Reward Management
  • Employee Engagement (Top up unit) - will follow on from this course for those who have studied unit 5HRD previously

On completion of these unit learners will:

  • Understand the purpose of employment regulation and the way it is enforced in practice
  • Know how to manage recruitment and selection activities lawfully
  • Know how to manage change and reorganisation lawfully
  • Know how to manage issues relating to pay and working time lawfully
  • Be able to ensure that staff are treated lawfully when they are at work
  • Know how to manage performance and disciplinary matters lawfully
  • Understand the business context of reward and the use of reward intelligence
  • Understand the key perspectives that inform reward decision making
  • Understand key reward principles, policies and practices
  • Understand the role of line managers in promoting a performance culture, in reward decision making and driving sustained organisation performance.

Entry Requirement

Applicants must have the CIPD Intermediate Certificate in Human Resource Management qualification.

Please note that if you have previously studied Unit 5HRD - Contemporary Development in Human Resources Development, you will have to enrol on this course and the Level 5 Intermediate Diploma - Top Up (single unit) JEBC038 as well. 


One written assignment per unit.

Where does this course lead to

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to CIPD Advanced qualifications.
