Level 4 Apprenticeship in Leadership and Management


Course Overview

This advanced level apprenticeship is equivalent to the first year of a degree and will provide you with the essential skills for a management role. You will learn how to develop operational plans, plan change and work productively with colleagues and stakeholders. 

This apprenticeship will provide you with a thorough and detailed approach to building and developing skills such as:

  • Communication
  • Team work
  • Interpersonal skills
  • The ability to manage both your own and your employees’ professional development

This apprenticeship will also enhance your ability to take on higher level responsibilities such as planning and implementing change within a business, alongside responsibilities such as:

  • Planning and leading complex team activities
  • Understanding and developing workplace relationships
  • Delegating authority in the workplace
  • Understanding financial management
  • Developing a work culture to support innovation and improvement


Course Content

The apprenticeship is made up of mandatory units which cover the essential skills required for working in a management position, such as developing operational plans, providing leadership and direction, planning change and working productively with colleagues and stakeholders. There are optional units which allow you to tailor the qualification to your specific role including:

  • Risk management
  • Promoting the use of technology
  • Customer focus
  • Managing quality
  • Market analysis
  • Managing budgets
  • Project management
  • Networking

Entry Requirement

You must have a relevant Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC or A-levels. You will need to be employed in a managerial role (we can help with finding relevant employment).


The Apprenticeship is completed with the support of an Assessor visiting the workplace and building a portfolio of evidence and assignments.

We would usually expect it to take 12 months to complete.

Where does this course lead to

Higher apprentices, with support and opportunities in the workplace, can progress onto:

a range of Management and other Professional Qualifications at level 6 and above

higher education to undertake management, business or other qualifications, including Degrees or Masters in Management & Leadership, Business and Business Management

further employment opportunities within their current job role/alternative job roles

specialised qualifications providing additional technical knowledge

possible membership of professional bodies, including the Chartered Management Institute and the Institute of Leadership & Management

With additional training, Higher apprentices may be able to progress in their careers to Senior Management or Director level roles and, in time, to Chief Executive positions.
