Course Overview

This apprenticeship allows learners to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours required for working with children aged 0 to 19, primarily within early learning and childcare and residential childcare. It’s suitable for those already working in the sector and who need to gain a Level 2 qualification and would like to eventually progress on to Level 3. Supported by a qualified trainer with appropriate and extensive occupational experience, the apprentice can have their training tailored to the requirements of the employer, whilst learning on the job and gaining the necessary qualifications to support their progression.

This apprenticeship is suitable for a learner who is currently working in the childcare sector or wishes to work with children. It will suit such job roles as: Early Years Worker/Assistant, Nursery Assistant, Care Worker/Assistant and Assistant Youth Support & Community Worker.

Course Content

The apprenticeship is made up of the following four components:

1.  Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce

Mandatory Units :

  • Child and Young Person Development
  • Safeguarding the Welfare of Children and Young People
  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour
  • Contribute to the support of child and young person development
  • Contribute to child and young people's health and safety
  • Contribute to the support of positive environments children and young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children and young people
  • Paediatric first aid, unit 1
  • Managing paediatric illness and injury unit

Optional Units include:

  • Understand Child and Young Person Development
  • Working together for the benefit of children and young people
  • Understand how to safeguard the well being of children and young people
  • Support children and young people's play and leisure
  • Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people
  • Support children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children and young people's settings
  • Understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties

2. Level 1 Functional Skills in English, maths and ICT

3. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

4. Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) embedded in Certificate

Entry Requirement

You will need four GCSEs at grade D/3 (preferably to include English, maths and a science) or successful completion of our Future Pathways course. You will need to be employed in a relevant role (we can help with finding relevant employment).

Assessment

Production of a Portfolio of evidence demonstrating understanding and competence in practice. Methods of evidence include:

Direct Observation by Assessor, Reflective Accounts, Professional Discussions with Assessor, Work Products, Cache Assignment Tasks.
