Course Overview

This is a work-based course that is completed over 12 months and you are expected to complete both knowledge and competency elements.  You will be supported by an experienced assessor and you will gather work-based evidence using an e-portfolio.  You will need a supportive employer who will allow an assessor into the workplace to conduct observations and discussions.

Course Content

The Level 2 Diploma supports learners to gain introductory knowledge and skills to work with children from birth to 7 years.

There are 11 mandatory units, which include communication, health and safety and safeguarding. Plus 2 optional units to choose from.

Entry Requirement

You should be employed or working as a volunteer in a suitable early years placement for a minimum of 3-6 months with a DBS clearance check. A good standard of English and Maths will be required which will be tested using an initial assessment method on enrolment.


This Diploma is delivered in the workplace using a variety of assessment methods collected throughout the course and include: workplace observations, witness testimonies, professional discussion, oral and written questions and work product evidence.

You can progress to a level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Educator qualification
