Course Overview

Computers are ubiquitous. They now are part of many aspects of life, from work to home, but how is it that they work? How are they built? What are applications and what do they do?

This course will give you a practical and theoretical insight into computer maintenance and installation and leads on to the CISCO IT Essentials Certificate (on successful completion of an online theory test and practical examination). This is an entry level industry qualification designed for those who want to become an IT professional or PC technician.

Course Content

The course is made up of 14 topics:

  • Introduction to the Personal Computer

  • Introduction to Lab Procedures and Tool Use

  • Computer Assembly

  • Overview of Preventive Maintenance

  • Windows Installation

  • Windows Configuration and Management

  • Networking Concepts

  • Applied Networking

  • Laptops and Mobile Devices

  • Mobile, Linux, and OS X Operating Systems

  • Printers

  • Security

  • The IT Professional

  • Advanced Troubleshooting

Entry Requirement

There is no formal entry criteria however having some I.T. experience and knowledge would be advantageous.


There are 14 topics, which are assessed via multiple choice chapter exams. You need complete all of these at a score of 70% or above. After completing these exams, you will then move to the final stage of the qualification which is a final multiple choice exam that covers content from all 14 chapters. After successful completion you need to complete a skills assessment which is set by the lecturer. This can either be done in the college or any other location of your choosing.
