Course Overview

Year One: Level 1 City and Guilds Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery
Year Two: Level 2 City and Guilds Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

This two-year course will provide you with a solid foundation in carpentry skills and includes moving and handling materials and equipment, carcassing, first and second fix, plasterwork and using power tools. 

Course Content

Year One

  • Carpentry and joinery skills
  • Clear and store carpentry and joinery tools and equipment
  • Health and safety in construction trades
  • Prepare to carry out carpentry and joinery
  • Working and communicating effectively in construction trades

Year Two

  • Carry out first fixing operations
  • Carry out maintenance to non-structural carpentry work
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Carry out structural carcassing operations
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Understanding construction technology
  • Understanding information, quantities and communication with others

Entry Requirement

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, preferably to include English and maths.
  • You must complete the Level 1 City & Guilds Diploma in Carpentry in Year One to progress to the full Level 2 Diploma in Year Two.


The course is continuously assessed through practical and written assignments/tests.

Where does this course lead to

On completion of the course, you will be able to progress onto a Level 3 course or a higher-level apprenticeship.
