Domestic Vented and Unvented Hot Water Systems

Course Overview

The aim of this course is to train candidates in the installation and safety requirements of domestic hot water and unvented hot water systems. Students will acquire understanding and comply with Building Regulation Part G (England and Wales) and associated legislation in installing, commissioning and maintenance of unvented hot water systems.

Course Content

Upon completion of the course the candidate will be able to: 

  • Recognise the various forms of hot water supplies
  • State the functional requirements of unvented domestic hot water systems
  • Design an unvented system to comply with Part G of the Building Regulations
  • Carry out commissioning of an Unvented System State and rectify common causes of faults in an unvented system.

Please note that it is illegal to work on unvented hot water systems (over 15L capacity) unless you hold a recognised qualification.

Entry Requirement

Full scope applicants require NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plumbing, Gas or Heating & Ventilation. 

There are no entry requirements for limited scope applicants.


The course assessment is split into three parts:

1) a multiple choice paper

2) a maintenance paper

3) a practical fault finding session.

Candidates who successfully complete this course will be eligible for registration on Competent Persons Schemes.
