Course Overview

This is a one year course designed to give students a preliminary qualification in painting and decorating providing the knowledge, skills and understanding required to progress to a Level 2 course.

Course Content

Students will be given instruction, guidance and encouragement to practise and develop the skills necessary to achieve the award.

  • Safe working practices
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Erect and dismantle access and working platforms
  • Preparation of surfaces
  • Application of paint systems by brush and roller
  • Apply papers to wall and ceilings
  • Knowhow to produce specialist decorative finishes.

Entry Requirement

2 GCSE's grade D or above in Maths and English. Mature student welcome.


The course is continuously assessed by both practical and written assignment/tests. There is also an external set exam.

Where does this course lead to

This course is a recognised route into a full-time or part time Level 2 course, employment or an apprenticeship.
