Course Overview

This apprenticeship includes learning about property maintenance, covering the aspects of ensuring that buildings are kept in good condition and that electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems and equipment are kept in working order. 

You will learn how to maintain a high level of quality for facilities, providing great satisfaction to customers, clients, guests and the team. As part of the apprenticeship, you will undertake preventative and reactive maintenance on buildings to ensure that the appearance of the interior and exterior is maintained appropriately.

Course Content

The primary role of a Property Maintenance Operative is to optimise property condition and quality and to ensure the building is kept in a safe working condition. You will provide first and immediate response to fault finding, whilst maximising quality and ensuring cost effectiveness. You will also ensure prevention of major damage that could result in extensive costs and minimise reactive intervention.

  • Carrying out repairs to a building
  • Maintaining plumbing and drainage systems
  • Maintaining electrical distribution in a building
  • Maintaining plant, safety systems and equipment
  • Energy, environment and sustainability practices
  • Maintaining the outside of a building
  • Using specialist tools and equipment to carry out repairs

As an apprentice you will be recognised by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) providing Associate Membership whilst you're studying.  BIFM have confirmed resources and learning materials will be available for you to support you throughout the duration of your learning journey.

Entry Requirement

1 GCSE at grade 3 or above and 1 GCSE at grade 2 or above.

Assessment

As part of the apprenticeship you will spend four days in the workplace and one day at college. The Level 2 NVQ for Property Maintenance is assessed through practical training and assessment tasks at work. The Level 2 Diploma in Property Maintenance is assessed through the completion of college assignments.

Where does this course lead to

You can progress into roles such as Technical Specialist in electrical or plumbing, and Supervisory and Management roles eg Facilities Management, across a wide range of sectors.
You can also progress into a specialist apprenticeship such as Carpentry, Installation Electrician or Gas Engineering.
