First Steps In Counselling

Course Overview

In this short course, you will learn some basic listening skills and have explored a variety of themes which present in counselling work.  You will also learn how important this type of helping work is, through reflecting on current mental health statistics. The course is a great introduction to the counselling profession and there will be plenty of advice and guidance on the best route for training and certification with BCoT.

Course Content

  • You’ll be able to describe what counselling is and how it fits into a wider ‘helping work’ context
  • You’ll understand the difference between empathy and how it is different from sympathy
  • You’ll be introduced to a variety of listening and attending skills
  • Understand how to progress with your training at BCoT and with our awarding body the CPCAB

Entry Requirement

There is no formal entry requirement but the following criteria should be considered before you sign up for this course:

  • Ability to cope with course content
  • Ability to translate intra-personal experience into language
  • Ability to benefit from self-development
  • Be motivated towards developing as a helper
  • Emotional stability

Identify reasons for training beyond just personal development


There is no formal assessment for this one day course.

Where does this course lead to

Candidates can apply for the CPCAB Level 2 Counselling skills course.  Please note BCoT offer a Level 2 Intensive day course over 18 weeks and a 30-week evening course.
