Level 4 Apprenticeship in IT (Cyber Intrusion Analyst)


Course Overview

The Level 4 apprenticeship is designed for new and existing employees to further develop their skills in networking and cyber security.

This apprenticeship includes learning about cyber intrusion, covering the aspects of ensuring breaches are detected in the network security system and escalate or create an incident report

You will learn how to use a range of automated tools to monitor networks in real time, including how to understand and interpret the alerts that are automatically generated by these tools and correlate this information, then judge whether or not the alert represents a security breach.

Job roles for an apprenticeship in this sector include:secure operations centre (SOC) analyst, intrusion analyst, network intrusion analyst, incident response centre (IRC) analyst, network operations centre (NOC) security analyst and risk analyst.

Course Content

The primary role of a Cyber Intrusion Analyst is to provide the first response when a security breach has been detected, then forward the incident onto the response team and provide evidence that supports their judgement that a breach has occurred. You will work as part of a team (or may lead a team) and will interact with external stakeholders, including customers and third-party sources of threat and vulnerability intelligence.

Throughout the apprenticeship you will learn:
  • How to recognise anomalies in observed network data structures
  • Accurately, impartially and concisely record and report the appropriate information
  • Recognise and identify all the main normal features of log files generated by typical network appliances, including servers and virtual servers, firewalls and routers
  • Undertake root cause analysis of events and make recommendations to reduce false positives and false negatives
  • Understand and utilise at least three Operating System (OS) security functions and associated features
  • Understand and propose appropriate responses to current and new attack techniques, hazards and vulnerabilities relevant to the network and business environment
  • Understands and advise others on cyber incident response processes, incident management processes and evidence collection/preservation requirements to support incident investigation.
  • Understand and adhere to and can advise on the ethical responsibilities of a cyber security professional

Throughout the duration the modules of study covered are:
  • Module 1: Networks
  • Module 2: Operating Systems
  • Module 3: Information and Cyber Security Foundations
  • Module 4: Business Processes
  • Module 5: Law, Regulation and Ethics

In addition you will also study and achieve CCNA 1 - Networking Fundamentals and CCNA 2 - Route Switching qualifications.

This apprenticeship is recognised for entry to IISP Associate Membership and for entry onto the Register of IT Technicians confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence. Those completing the apprenticeship are eligible to apply for registration.

Entry Requirement

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths, or a relevant Level 3 qualification.
  • You will need to be employed, or find employment in the IT industry.


As part of the apprenticeship programme you will spend four days in the workplace and one day at college. You'll be assessed through practical training and assessment tasks at work, as well as through the completion of college assignments. 

For the five core modules you will be required to undertake an exam at the end of each assessment, as well as two exams for the additional CCNA qualifications

Upon completion of the apprenticeship you can progress further within the profession into a wide range of IT and Cyber Security roles across many sectors, or undertake related to the subject and role in the workplace.
