Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering


Course Overview

This Apprenticeship combines two principal qualifications: Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Leadership (delivered mostly in the workplace with tailorable units) and either the HNC in Manufacturing Engineering or HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (completed as day-release to college). 


Course Content

This Apprenticeship programme covers a range of practical skills and underpinning knowledge and includes the following components:

1. Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Leadership (one pathway)

  • Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Mandatory units for the two pathways include:

  • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements
  • Plan and manage a project
  • Solve Engineering Problems

Optional units (dependant on chosen pathway) include:

  • Producing electrical or electronic engineering drawings using a CAD system
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • Build, support and manage a team
  • Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements

2. Level 4 Edexcel Diploma in Engineering (in chosen pathway)

Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering OR Edexcel BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering OR

3. Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT

4. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

5. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Entry Requirement

GCSE's in English, Maths and a science subject at grade C or above. Completion of Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering.

The Apprenticeship will suit job roles such as (dependant on chosen pathway) - Manufacturing Senior Technician, Senior Production Technician, Senior Electronics Production Technician and Electronic Engineering Software/Hardware Senior Technician.


The Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma is assessed by the candidate completing a portfolio of evidence gathered from workplace activities. The Level 4 Edexcel Diploma in Engineering is assessed through the completion of college assignments.

Where does this course lead to

Progression to the Higher framework for Advanced Manufacturing (Mechanical - Level 6)

Employment as a technician in Electrical/Electronic engineering in a variety of job roles and functions.
