Course Overview

This HND is a university-level qualification (Level 5) delivered in partnership with the University of Portsmouth at BCoT, it is designed for people currently employed within the sector wishing to progress and to enhance their career prospects.

 An HND provides the opportunity to upgrade knowledge and skills, combining work and study and maybe a more cost-effective alternative to university study. This course is the equivalent second year of a full-time university-level programme and is a part-time day/evening release course each week.

 You will gain knowledge and experience by analysing and working principles applicable to current technologies. You will develop knowledge and undertake a range of hands-on projects, mixed with academic theory. During the course, we will support the development of key skills, including math's, problem-solving, decision making, IT and communication.

 This course is on a part-time basis, one day a week over two years, and will be delivered on a Tuesday and is open to Apprentices and Mature students.

The lessons will be delivered via a blended learning approach (Distance learning and face to face delivery) this will be agreed with your Lecturer during your first lessons.

Course Content

Mandatory Units.

 Unit 66 Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles.  Y1

Unit 4 Mechanical Principles (only for those that need it).  Y1

Unit 59: Advanced Mathematics for Engineering. Y1

Unit 28 Research Project.  Y2

 Units (can be deleted as required)

 Unit 62 Strength of Material.

Unit 30: Quality Assurance and Management.

Unit 38 Managing People in Engineering.

Unit 19 Computer-aided Design and Manufacture.

Unit 39: Electronic Principles.

 Additional units (can be inserted as required) –

Unit 29: Work-based Experience.

Unit 21: Materials Engineering.

Unit 58: Microprocessor Systems.

 

Your units will be agreed with your Lecturer during your first lesson and these will be assessed by a variety of methods that include Assignments, reports and research projects which need to come from your workplace.

The college offers a wide range of resources and facilities including e-learning tools, a suitably equipped place to work, IT facilities and other learning resources that will be appropriate for the nature of the work you will be required to undertake. Further details can be found in the course handbook, which will be given to you within the first few weeks of the course.

Entry Requirement

To join this course, you will need to have completed either an HNC in Mechanical Engineering or HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or an HNC in General Engineering. You will be required to present your HNC certificates as evidence during your enrolment.

Assessment

Your units will be agreed with your Lecturer during your first lesson and you will be assessed by producing evidence that meets the outcomes of each unit. 

Assessment is continuous and includes assignments, case studies, projects and presentations together with any work related projects that may meet the requirements. 

It is likely that the evidence provided will include and involve real work based projects from your employer or other related companies.

These are part time courses studied over 2 or 3 years (2-3 modules per year). These courses are not accredited.

Your employers would need to be supportive and happy to sponsor them through this route by using the Apprentice standards.

Alternatively, you can join full time on campus Level 6 courses.
