Course Overview

This course will enable you to develop the skills needed to read, understand and analyse  a wide range of different texts and write clearly.

Course Content

An accessible enabling qualification.

This course offers an assessment journey that supports students through each paper.

The course offers two clear and distinct areas of study: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing and Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives through reading and analysis of engaging 19th, 20th and 21st texts.

Students will progress through this course by developing a variety of skills through interesting and engaging activities. 

Students will be required to develop and deliver a presentation on a topic of choice (approved by their teacher).

Entry Requirement

You may have previously completed GCSE English Language and are looking to improve your grade. The course is also available to anyone who does not currently hold a GCSE in English, or has completed a Functional Skills course in English.  Applicants will need to complete a competency assessment to ensure that the course is matched to their ability before a place can be offered. 

If you already have a Grade C or a Grade 4 in GCSE English Language and want to improve your grade, or are a non-EU citizen, you will have to pay the £400 fee listed.

If you are an EU citizen without a Grade C or Grade 4, this course is free of charge.


The course is assessed by two, summer examination papers and a separate Speaking and Listening Oral assessment. 

Where does this course lead to

Attaining a level 4/5 in GCSE English Language is an essential qualification to further learning opportunities (often essential for university application)  and improving employment opportunities. 

How to Enrol

To enrol on this course you must first complete an ESOL/English/Maths assessment.  This is completed at college. Please telephone 01256 306484 to book an appointment.
