Level 3 Apprenticeship in Barbering


Course Overview

This apprenticeship will provide an individual learning programme to help you to become an outstanding barber. It is delivered on a day-release basis and workplace experience. You will learn how to give consultation support to other colleagues, monitor and maintain health and safety in the salon whilst developing your skills in cutting, including facial hair and colour to create a variety of looks.

Course Content

The programme covers a range of barbering duties and includes the following four components:

1. Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering

Mandatory units include:

  • G22 - Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • G18 - Promote additional services or products to clients
  • G21 - Provide hairdressing consultation services
  • GB7 - Design and create a range of facial hair shapes
  • GB8 - Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques
  • GB6 - Provide shaving services
  • GH17 - Colour hair using a variety of techniques
  • GH21 - Develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills
  • G11 - Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business

Optional units may be chosen on an individual basis:

  • GB9 - Provide face massage
  • AH35 - Design and create patterns in hair
  • GH18 - Provide colour correction services
  • GH22 - Create a variety of permed effects
  • G11 - Contribute to the planning & implementation of promotional activities

2. Functional Skills in Maths and English (Level 2)

3. Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

4. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

Use of a computer from home or the workplace is essential.

Entry Requirement

  • A relevant Level 2 qualification.
  • You will need to be employed, or find employment, within the hair and barbering sector.


Certification is achieved through continuous assessment of practical, oral, written assessment and online tests throughout the course. A portfolio of evidence will also be produced during the course. Candidates will need to provide own models for practice and assessment.

Where does this course lead to

On completion of this Level 3 qualification, progression options could include Level 4 qualifications or employment as an experienced barber.
