Understanding the Care & Management of Diabetes - Level 2 NCFE Certificate

Course Overview

This course is designed for anyone who would like to gain an understanding of the care and management of diabetes.

It could help learners get into, or progress within, employment in the healthcare or social care sectors in a variety of job roles or support further learning in the Health and Social Care sector.

Course Content

This course consists of four mandatory units, all of which you will need to complete in order to gain the full qualification:

  • Unit 01 Understand diabetes
    You’ll understand how glucose and insulin function in the body, how different types of diabetes occur and the risk factors associated with Type 2 diabetes.
  • Unit 02 Prevention and early intervention of Type 2 diabetes
    You’ll understand how the onset of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes.
  • Unit 03 Understand the initial care of diabetes
    You’ll understand how a diagnosis of diabetes can impact on a person and how the condition can be managed and monitored.
  • Unit 04 Understand the treatment and management of diabetes
    You’ll understand the on-going care and treatment recommended to control blood glucose levels and prevent complications for people with diabetes.

Entry Requirement

You don’t need to have any specific prior learning requirements to take this course, but you may find it helpful if you’ve already achieved a Level 1 qualification within the Health and Social Care area.

You need to be at least 16 years old to take this qualification.

In order to complete this Distance Learning Course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • If you are 19-23 year olds you must have already achieved a level 2 qualification or equivalent
  • If you are 24+ there are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will find it helpful to have a good standard of English and Maths

Assessment

This is a vocationally related QCF qualification with 105 guided learning hours.

Learners can expect to be involved in formal learning activities, which could include classes, tutorials or seminars. You’re also expected to work independently researching the subject and preparing for class-based activities. 100% of this qualification focuses on developing your knowledge and understanding of the care and management of diabetes.

This is a standalone qualification and is not part of an Apprenticeship framework.

Where does this course lead to

Successful completion will help support a number of job roles within the Health and Social Care sector as you may be working with people who have diabetes, or may be at risk of developing diabetes, in your day-to-day role, for example:

  • healthcare support service worker
  • clinical healthcare support worker
  • nursing assistant
  • health education/health promotion worker
  • healthcare assistants/support workers in community and primary care environments
  • personal assistants employed directly by the individual they support or their families
  • You could also progress to the following Apprenticeships:
    • Advanced level Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care
    • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health (Clinical Healthcare Support)
    • Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health (Healthcare Support Services)

    • NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
    • NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England
    • NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills
    • Level 3 Certificate in Working with Individuals with Diabetes
    • Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support Services
    • Level 3 Certificate in Working in the Health Sector
