Principles of Dementia Care Level 2 Certificate

Course Overview

This course, designed for a wide range of learners, is for whose wishing to gain an understanding of the principles of dementia care.

It is intended for learners preparing to enter, or progress in, employment in the Health or Social Care sector in job roles where an understanding of dementia is required. It is suitable for those wanting to understand more about the care of a loved one.

We aim to develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of caring for people with dementia. Students develop knowledge of person-centred care, the influence of positive communication methods, issues relating to the use of medication for people with dementia and the importance of providing appropriate activities.

You need to be at least 16 years old to undertake this course. Entry is at the discretion of BCoT.

Course Content

This course includes seven mandatory units which you need to complete in order to gain the qualification. These are:

Unit 01 Dementia awareness
You’ll develop your knowledge of what dementia is and its different forms, and how others can have an impact on a person with dementia.

Unit 02 The person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia
This unit looks at the well-being of those with dementia. You’ll learn about the person-centred approach to dementia care and support.

Unit 03 Understand the factors that can influence communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia
We look at the differing communication needs and abilities of people with dementia.

Unit 04 Understand equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care
You’ll understand the concepts of equality, diversity and inclusion that are fundamental to person-centred care.

Unit 05 Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person-centred approach
You’ll develop an awareness of the potential needs for receiving medication due to dementia.

Unit 06 Understand behaviour in the context of dementia

You’ll explore different forms of behaviour and the factors that can affect behaviour in a person with a dementia and how to respond in an appropriate and supportive way.

Unit 07 Understand the benefits of engaging in activities in social care
You’ll understand the benefits of engaging in activities to enhance physical, mental and social well-being.

Entry Requirement

In order to complete this Distance Learning Course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • If you are 19-23 year olds you must have already achieved a level 2 qualification or equivalent
  • If you are 24+ there are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will find it helpful to have a good standard of English and Maths


This is a vocationally related QCF qualification with 123 guided learning hours. Within this time the learner can expect to be involved in formal learning activities which could include classes, tutorials or seminars. Students are expected to work independently, research the subject and preparing for class-based activities.

100% of this qualification focuses on developing your knowledge and understanding of the principles of dementia care.

This is a standalone qualification and is not part of an Apprenticeship framework.

Where does this course lead to

Successful completion of this course will help support a number of job roles within the Health and Social Care sector as Learners may be working with people who have dementia, or are at risk of developing dementia in your day-to-day role. These job roles could include:

  • healthcare support service worker
  • clinical healthcare support worker
  • healthcare assistant
  • nursing assistant
  • mental health support worker
  • substance misuse worker
  • health education/health promotion worker


Completion of this course may enable you to progress into the above job roles within the Health and Social Care sector as a new entrant or as part of your ongoing career development.
