Awareness of Mental Health Problems - Level 2 NCFE Certificate

Course Overview

Workers in a wide range of service roles are likely to meet people with mental health issues and needs in their day to day work. This could be anyone working in areas like customer service, housing, the voluntary sector, sport and recreation, hospitality or travel and tourism.

This course is designed for anyone who wants to raise their awareness of mental health and the problems that can cause mental ill-health.

You may wish to progress to further qualifications or employment within health and social care, to complement your other qualifications or develop within your current job role..

This course will specifically support anyone who needs to understand mental health issues in relation to the disability discrimination aspects of the Equality Act.

Course Content

This course consists of the following ten mandatory units, all of which need to be achieved to complete the full qualification:

  • Understanding mental health
  • Understanding stress
  • Understanding anxiety
  • Understanding phobias
  • Understanding depression
  • Understanding post-natal depression
  • Understanding bipolar disorder
  • Understanding schizophrenia
  • Understanding dementia
  • Understanding eating disorders


In each of the above areas you will develop an understanding of the topic in relation to symptoms, experience for the individual, support needs, how the disorder can be managed and treated and the roles and needs of family and friends.

Entry Requirement

In order to complete this Distance Learning Course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • If you are 19-23 year olds you must have already achieved a level 2 qualification or equivalent
  • If you are 24+ there are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will find it helpful to have a good standard of English and Maths


There are no exams to achieve this qualification.  Your learning will be assessed through a portfolio of coursework and assignments.

  • Level 3 Certificate in Stroke Care Management
  • Level 3 Diploma In Allied Health Profession Support
  • Intermediate and Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care
  • Intermediate and Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Health (Clinical Healthcare Support)
