BCoT held its first virtual open event of the academic year on Tuesday 13 October.
Why did you choose to study with BCoT at the end of Year 11?I wanted to do Public Services and it was the best place locally to study it. I looked at the main local colleges but I chose BCoT as I’ve always wanted to be in the Fire Service.
Why did you choose your course/Apprenticeship in particular? I have family members who work in the Fire Service so I’ve always wanted to do it. I spent a number of years in the Fire Cadets programme alongside secondary school so studying Public Services full-time was the obvious next step to take.
What are you planning on doing after studying at BCoT? Since leaving BCoT I’ve joined Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service as a full-time firefighter. I actually got the job just before I completed my studies so I was even called-out a few times during my lesson! My lecturers always understood of course.
What do you like most about your course/apprenticeship? Any memorable moments/trips/units?It’s a great course. We went on loads of trips and had guest lectures from members from all the different services. You explore so many different roles within the services and you get such a good knowledge of the emergency services.
What do you think of your teachers at BCoT?My tutors were absolutely brilliant. They were easy to get along with and they always treated me like an adults, which was the thing I liked most about college compared to school.
What would you say to anyone thinking of doing the same course as you?Definitely do it. If you’re looking at joining any of the services, the variety of the course means you learn about all of them which can help you pick a favourite. My tutors helped me apply for jobs and showed us loads of ways to get into the services.
