Reflections on Italy Turing Trip
The tools have been packed away and the passports stamped, but for our Engineering and Automotive students, the impact of their recent Turing Scheme trip to Italy will last a lifetime.
The heart of the trip was an immersive dive into the Italian industrial sector. At TECSEO, students were immediately challenged to adapt to a fast-paced environment. At the same time, their time at Sigma allowed them to shadow mechanical engineers, gaining insights into the precision and discipline required at the highest levels of manufacturing.
The group witnessed the evolution of transport first-hand:
- Innovation at Taumat: Students were inspired by the creative engineering involved in converting vintage motorbikes into modern electric mopeds.
- The Assembly Line at IAT: Gaining hands-on experience with E-bike design gave the group a new perspective on the future of green mobility.
- Robotics at Baomarc: Seeing advanced welding robots produce parts for giants like Maserati, Fiat, and Jeep brought the scale of global automotive engineering to life.

While the technical skills gained were invaluable, the personal growth happened in the moments between the work. The weekends provided a much-needed breath of fresh air and a chance for the group to bond.

The coastal walk at Punta Aderci offered a moment of quiet reflection against a stunning backdrop, while Sunday’s scavenger hunt through the local streets tested their problem-solving skills and culminated in a well-earned pizza feast. Walking through the halls of the Castle of Casoli after a day at the factory served as a powerful reminder of the deep history that sits alongside Italy’s modern innovation.
This journey was more than a series of factory tours; it was a life-changing opportunity for our students to build confidence, independence and a global perspective. For many, this was their first time in a foreign country, navigating language barriers and new technical standards.
As they return to college, they return with a broadened horizon and the realisation that their skills can take them anywhere in the world.
