This apprenticeship is designed to develop expert mechanics and
technicians ready to work on modern cars. This programme is perfect for
dedicated individuals of all ages, from new entrants to the industry to
those looking to formalise their skills who have a passion for automotive
technology and precision engineering.
A Motor Vehicle Technician services and repairs light vehicles, such as cars and vans, and works either in dealerships that focus on a particular manufacturer or for an independent garage that deals with many different makes of vehicles. They work on all the systems found within the vehicle. The nature of the work ranges from replacing simple parts to solving complex faults using diagnostic methods and equipment.
The Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician standard focuses on providing
comprehensive knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours. You will learn to work on a wide variety of vehicle makes and models. Areas of study and practical skill development include:
- Routine Servicing and Maintenance: Conducting scheduled services, including fluid checks, component replacement, and system adjustments in line with manufacturer specifications.
- Engine Systems: Advanced diagnosis and repair of internal combustion engine systems (petrol and diesel), including cooling, lubrication, and exhaust systems.
- Chassis Systems: Expert knowledge and repair of steering, suspension, braking (including ABS and electronic stability control), and wheel alignment systems.
- Electrical and Electronic Systems: Diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle wiring, charging, starting, lighting, and auxiliary electronic systems using specialist diagnostic equipment.
- Transmission Systems: Understanding the construction, operation, and maintenance of manual, automatic, and semi-automatic transmission systems.
- Vehicle Diagnostics: Developing methodical fault-finding techniques using a variety of tools, including scopes and manufacturer-specific diagnostic software, to identify and rectify faults accurately.
- Health and Safety: Adhering strictly to workshop safety protocols and environmental regulations regarding waste disposal and component handling.
All apprentices will be given the opportunity to complete the IMI Certificate in Automotive Refrigerant Handling as part of their apprenticeship programme.
To qualify for this apprenticeship programme, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- You must be employed in a relevant role (servicing and maintaining light vehicles).
- Candidates need a strong technical aptitude and a dedication to high-quality, precise workmanship and customer service.
- A strong foundation in English and maths is vital. Candidates are typically required to demonstrate competence equivalent to grade 4/C or above at GCSE level.
Achievement of Functional Skills in English and maths at Level 2 is mandatory before the End-Point Assessment (EPA). Dedicated support and tuition will be provided by the college to ensure you meet these essential mandatory requirements.
EPA INFORMATION
The End-Point Assessment (EPA) typically comprises three distinct methods:
1. Knowledge Assessment: A structured series of written or online tests covering the breadth of technical knowledge relating to vehicle systems and diagnostic processes.
2. Skills Test: A comprehensive practical assessment designed to test the apprentice’s ability to safely and accurately diagnose and repair faults across mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems under controlled conditions.
3. Professional Discussion: A structured conversation between the apprentice and
the independent assessor, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence (created during the apprenticeship) and a project. This tests the apprentice’s understanding of their decisions, problem-solving abilities, and professional behaviours.
Apprentices will be graded as Fail, Pass, or Distinction based on their performance across all components of the EPA.
Successful completion of the Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician programme, you will be a fully qualified, highly skilled, and competent technician.
Possible next steps for career and educational advancement include:
- Employment: Progressing into a senior or specialist technician role within the light vehicle maintenance sector, focusing on diagnostics, advanced repairs, or specific technologies.
- Higher-Level Apprenticeships: Enrolling on a higher-level apprenticeship (Level 4 and above), such as a Vehicle Damage Assessor or a Master Technician programme, to specialise further.
- Specialisation: Undertaking manufacturer-specific training or professional certifications in emerging technologies, such as hybrid and electric vehicle maintenance, to expand your marketability.
- Further Education: Using the qualification as a platform for vocational HNCs, HNDs, or relevant engineering degrees in automotive design or motorsport technology at a university.
