Course Overview

Over the past few years, the number of people who experience allergic reactions has been steadily rising. Today, there are an estimated two million people in the UK living with an allergy.


The objective of this qualification is to introduce learners working with children, working in adult health and social care, or working in the service sector, to allergens, allergies, food labelling, and allergy awareness for those who are either working with children, working in adult health and social care, or working in the service sector. The course includes information on the symptoms of allergic reactions, the treatments available for allergic reactions, and first aid for those experiencing a severe allergic reaction.

The course is suitable for a wide range of learners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of allergies. It may be useful as an introduction for those who wish to pursue a career in working with people who have allergies, or those preparing for a wide range of job roles in diverse sectors which require them to have an awareness of allergies as part of their responsibilities.

Course Content

There are three optional units which cater for those in different sectors: those who work in childcare (Unit 3), those who work with adults (Unit 4), and those who work in the service sector (Unit 5).

This course is split into three manageable units:

  • Unit 1: Allergens, allergies and intolerances (MANDATORY)
    You will learn the background knowledge behind allergies, allergens and intolerances. They will also understand how allergies and intolerances are diagnosed and treated.
  • Unit 2: Food labelling and packaging (MANDATORY)
    You will look at the different types of food labels and why they are so crucial in keeping those with allergies safe. You will then come to understand the regulations surrounding food labelling and be able to recognise when a label is incorrect.
  • Unit 3: Allergy awareness for those working with children (OPTIONAL)
    Unit 3 is an optional unit and all the information is focused on children. they will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions on different body parts and how to perform first aid on those who have experienced a severe reaction. Learners will then look at what can be done in order to reduce the risk in terms of medication, avoidance and medical ID jewellery.
  • Unit 4: Allergy awareness for those working in adult health and social care (OPTIONAL)
    Unit 4 is an optional unit and all the information is focused on adult health and social care. In this unit, they will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions on different body parts and how to perform first aid on those who have experienced a severe reaction. You will then look at what can be done in order to reduce the risk in terms of avoidance, food preparation and medical ID jewellery.
  • Unit 5: Allergy awareness for those working in the service sector (OPTIONAL)
    Unit 5 is an optional unit and all the information is focused on the service sector. In this unit, you will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions on different body parts and how to perform first aid on those who have experienced a severe reaction. You will then look at what can be done in order to reduce the risk in terms of food storage, handling and preparation.

Entry Requirement

In order to complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:

  • Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
  • Will be undertaking your learning within England
  • Are aged 19 or above
  • If you are 19-23 years old you must have already achieved a Level 2 qualification or equivalent
  • If you are 24+ there are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will find it helpful to have a good standard of English and math
