Building New Skills for a Changing World
After a successful corporate career managing major programmes for global organisations including HSBC, Citi, and BT, Gregory Griffin unexpectedly found himself facing an uncertain future following redundancy.
By late 2024, Gregory was approaching a third Christmas without work. Despite submitting more than 1,000 job applications and securing 20 interviews, he repeatedly faced the same frustrating feedback: he was "overqualified."
For someone accustomed to succeeding at Chief of Staff level, the prolonged period out of work took a heavy toll on his confidence, while placing significant pressure on his family and finances.
Refusing to be held back by a challenging job market, Gregory decided to take control of his career path. Instead of standing still, he enrolled in an AI Skills Bootcamp right here at Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT).
Overcoming Challenges & Championing Classmates
Returning to education brought its own unique challenges. Gregory has additional learning needs, meaning technical tasks often required significantly more time, focus, and concentration. Drawing on the discipline built throughout his corporate career, he applied the same careful planning and determination to his studies at BCoT that he had once brought to multi-million-pound corporate projects.
The Skills Bootcamp did more than teach Gregory about rapidly evolving artificial intelligence—it helped him recognise that his decades of accumulated experience still held immense value.
His hard work culminated in a final portfolio presentation that blew his educators away. BCoT tutor Jack Roche praised Gregory's work, describing it as:
"The best presentation I have seen during my entire teaching career."
Gregory’s impact extended far beyond his own grades. In the classroom, he quickly became a supportive anchor for his peers, using his communication, diplomacy, and leadership skills to mentor fellow adult learners who felt less confident with new technologies.
A Fresh Start and a New Role
The investment in his education paid off. Combining his newly acquired AI expertise with his extensive professional background, Gregory successfully ended his two-year job search by securing a key role at the University of Warwick.
Gregory’s story is a testament to the life-changing impact of adult education during moments of profound transition. For Gregory, returning to study at BCoT wasn't just about learning new software—it was about rebuilding confidence and adapting his skill set for a modern workplace.
Why Adult Learning Matters
Changes in technology, the economy, or personal circumstances can leave even the most experienced professionals wondering where they fit into today's job market. Adult education offers a clear route forward, helping people adapt, rebuild confidence, and unlock new career opportunities.
Gregory’s journey was featured as part of the Association of Colleges' Adult Learning Pays campaign, which highlights how returning to education can transform lives and boost local economies.
