DIY SOS Transformation
Students from Construction stepped into the national spotlight after joining the team of BBC One’s flagship show, DIY SOS, to help transform the home of a deserving local family.
In an inspiring display of community spirit and hands-on skill, Level 2 construction students put their training to work on site in Bitterne, Southampton. Working alongside presenter Nick Knowles and a dedicated crew of tradespeople and volunteers, the students utilised their carpentry, electrical, and plumbing expertise to convert a hazardous building project into a secure, state-of-the-art home.
The featured project centres on Ahmed and Rifat Ali, a deaf couple who communicate using British Sign Language (BSL), and their three children, including a son with autism.
After investing their savings into a ground-floor extension to make their living environment accessible and functional for their family's needs, the project stalled. The unfinished work left much of the ground floor hazardous and uninhabitable, confining the family of five to the upper level of their home.
BCoT's trades students joined the fast-paced effort to complete the build, turning the site around in just ten days.
For both staff and students, participating in the high-profile build provided invaluable professional insight into the speed, coordination, and teamwork required on a major construction site.
"Having watched DIY SOS for years, I always wondered how much of the timeline was real. By 5 pm on day one, a full extension was already rising where a stripped-down shell stood hours earlier. In just ten days, the team turned a hazardous house into a secure, state-of-the-art home tailored to the family's needs. It was a deeply enlightening experience for our staff and students, and one we won't forget."
Craig McLaren, Course Director for Construction at BCoT
"This was such a worthy and unique experience for BCoT to be involved with. The students and staff were able to work alongside tradespeople, all of whom were sharing a common goal of helping the family involved—which was such an important message for our students to appreciate."
Steve Gilder, Head of Construction at BCoT
The episode highlighting our students' hard work and dedication aired on BBC One at 8:00 PM on Tuesday, October 6.
If you missed the live broadcast, you can catch up anytime on BBC iPlayer to see our students in action and witness the full transformation of the Ali family home.
