Course Overview

This BPEC qualification is for those operatives currently employed in the plumbing and domestic heating industry, providing them with the necessary training to develop their existing skills. Candidates will be required to demonstrate the necessary abilities, skills, and knowledge to be able to plan, select, install and commission air source heat pump systems. In addition to this, candidates will also demonstrate a knowledge of service, maintenance and fault diagnosis and fault rectification of air source heat pump systems. 

Course Content

Unit Title - Know the requirements to size, select, install, commission and hand over air source heat pump systems (non-refrigerant circuits). 


AIM – The unit focuses upon the underpinning knowledge required to plan and prepare for, install (including testing and commissioning) and hand over heat pump system installations. The unit focuses primarily on air source systems. The unit covers fundamental heat pump system design awareness and component selection but does not include detailed system design.

Unit Title - Plan, prepare, install, commission, and maintain an air source heat pump (non-refrigerant circuits)

AIM - The unit focuses on the occupational competence required for planning, preparation, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of an air source heat pump system. The unit covers a minimum requirement for a connection to the ‘wet’ central heating system to panel radiators or underfloor heating systems. The unit does not cover aspects of heat pump service and maintenance work that involves handling fluorinated greenhouse gases or working on the heat pump refrigerant circuit.

Entry Requirement

Candidates are required to have completed one of the below qualifications before enrolling on this course:
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence. 
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence.
  • Heating installers with minimum 3 years of experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification or Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration.

Assessment

Unit: Know the requirements to size, select, install, commission and handover air source heat pump systems (non-refrigerant circuits) To achieve the completion of this knowledge unit you must satisfactorily complete the two online multiple-choice tests for the knowledge learning outcomes within the unit. 


Unit: Plan, prepare, install, commission, and maintain air source heat pump systems (non-refrigerant circuits) To achieve the completion of this performance unit you must complete the appropriate practical performance activities in simulated conditions as per the requirements of the unit as specified in the BCoT practical assessment for this qualification
