Course Introduction

Looking to launch or advance your career in engineering, be it in a mechanical or electrical/electronic discipline, while working or managing other commitments? The Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) offers the flexibility to study just one day a week over two academic years, giving you a university-accredited qualification without putting your life on hold.

This programme, delivered in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, is ideal for those already in industry or anyone seeking a recognised pathway into higher-level technical roles or further study.

The course offers a range of units which cover both the mechanical and electrical/electronic pathways, as well as some of the fundamental skills required at this level of study to advance your career. A breakdown can be seen below.

Year 1
Analytical Methods for Engineers
Engineering Science
Digital and Analogue Devices and Circuits E&E Principles
Electrical & Electronic Principles

Year 2
Project D, I & E
Engineering Design
Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines
Maintenance Engineering
Your modules will be assessed by a variety of methods that include assignments, reports and research projects, ideally from the applicant's workplace.
  • GCSE English and maths at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) are essential. You will be required to provide a copy of your certificates or proof that you have completed the required courses at your interview.
  • A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
  • Other related level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Related work experience
  • An international equivalent of the above

You will be required to attend an interview with a member of the faculty staff and to complete a maths assessment before being accepted onto the course which will be discussed during the interview.

All applicants must attempt the entry test (mathtutor.ac.uk & mathcentre.ac.uk will support this), you are expected to be at a certain level of maths before starting the course as you will be studying it at degree level.
You will be assessed by producing evidence that meets the outcomes of each unit, usually in the form of Assessments. The assessment is continuous. It includes projects and presentations together with any work-related projects that may meet the requirements. It is likely that the evidence provided will include and involve real work-based projects from your employer. Classwork will include group work, discussions and formative assessments.
The successful completion of this course provides you with the progression to further higher education programmes such as an HND or a degree.
To enrol on this course you will need to have a telephone interview with the course tutor. Please email information@bcot.ac.uk with your contact details or telephone 01256 306484 to arrange. You will receive an enrollment code to use for online enrollment by applying below.
