Course Introduction

Standard Reference: ST1426

Engineering maintenance technicians (EMT) work in a range of industries that use plant, equipment and systems. This includes energy, leisure entertainment, manufacturing, processing, and utilities companies.

They maintain plant, equipment and systems to optimise operation. They conduct planned and preventative maintenance to prevent issues occurring, and reactive maintenance when problems occur. For example, responding to breakdowns. They must prepare for and accept jobs, complete work safely to required standards, close the job, and complete work records. They also contribute to continuous improvement activities. They may complete work as part of a team or alone, depending on the task.

They must maintain the safe and reliable operation of plant, equipment and systems. Work must comply with any industry specific regulations. They must comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations and procedures, and sustainability practices. They must complete tasks in line with their company’s procedures and timescales. They must also take account of wider business considerations, such as cost and service level agreements.

This apprenticeship will be completed over 42 months, with an additional 4 months for Gateway/End-Point Assessment. Throughout this apprenticeship, you will be gaining knowledge, skills and adopting engineering behaviours at work and within the college.

At BCoT – First 2 years
  • Year 1 – Day release at BCoT - Level 3 City and Guilds Diploma in Engineering
  • Year 2 – Day release at BCoT – Level 3 City and Guilds Diploma in Engineering

At the Workplace – Throughout the apprenticeship (42 months)
  • A work-based E-Portfolio comprising of a variation of evidence that meet the KSBs.
  • 20% Off The Job Training (OTJ) record (agreed by the employer and Training Provider).
  • Learning hands-on skills on workplace plant and equipment, conducting reactive and Planned/Preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment.
  • Four GCSEs at grade 4/C or above in English, maths and preferably a science subject.
  • You will need to be employed, or find employment, in the engineering sector. 
The End Point Assessment (EPA) is an independent final assessment, taken at the end of the apprenticeship. For this standard, there are 3 assessments;
  • Assessment method 1 - observation with questions
  • Assessment method 2 - interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
  • Assessment method 3 - multiple-choice test

The result from each assessment method is combined to decide the overall apprenticeship grade. Pass, Merit, Distinction. 
  • Automation and controls engineering technician Level 4
  • Lead engineering maintenance technician Level 4
  • Manufacturing engineer Level 6
