Access to Higher Education Diploma in Medicine & Medical Sciences

Course Overview

This course has been designed specifically for mature students who have been out of full-time education for at least one year or do not have the relevant qualifications for entry to higher education.

You will attend college three days a week between 9.30am and 3pm.

You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you with your UCAS application and personal development. As well as the core study skills units, this course has been designed to offer 21 credits in Biology, 15 credits in Chemistry and 9 credits in clinical skills so that the learner has a good foundation in both subject areas enabling applications to a wide range of medical science related degrees. You will have 45 credits which are graded, 15 credits which are ungraded study skills.

Your learning is further supported by Google Classrooms where all resources and assignments are uploaded for you to use. 

Course Content

The course includes a variety of units covering Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. The list of units include the following:

  • Blood, circulation and gaseous exchange for healthcare

  • Evolution and Ecology
  • Reproduction and Inheritance
  • Musculoskeletal System
  • Drugs and Food Additives
  • Equilibria Acids and Buffers
  • Reaction Kinetics and Energetics
  • Separation and Analysis
  • Periodic table, ionisation energies and redox
  • Clinical Skills
  • Understanding the patient journey 
  • Research Project
  • Academic Writing

Entry Requirement

You need to be aged 19+ from the beginning of September.

You should have a minimum of GCSE English or Maths at grade C/4 or Functional Skills Level 2 in English or Maths. If you do not have either English or Maths you can complete this in addition to the Access course.

Assessment

This course is assessed in a variety of ways with assignments including: presentations, discussions, tests, projects, practical work, problem solving exercises, essays, scientific reports, diagrams and interviews.

Where does this course lead to

This course is designed to get you to University and is worth between 48 and 144 UCAS points (for September entry), depending on the grade you achieve. This Access course can be used for entry to Psychology degree programs.
