The broad purpose of the engineering and manufacturing support technician is to provide the required level of technical assistance on areas of engineering or manufacturing. They report on processes and procedures using communications software, test analysis tools, measurement systems, offline programming, and quality control. They support production planning, scheduling, product technical applications and capability supporting continuous improvements. They support technical marketing sales and purchasing, product development and innovation. They investigate and review services, producing technical reports and documentation. They carry out inspections or tests to analyse products or services. Engineering and manufacturing support technicians typically work in engineering or manufacturing environments. They may also be required to work outdoors inspecting and testing products and processes.
This apprenticeship will be completed over 36 months, with an additional 4 months for Gateway/End-Point Assessment. Throughout this apprenticeship, you will be gaining knowledge, skills and adopting engineering behaviours at work and within the college.
At BCoT – First 2 years
- Year 1 – Day release at BCoT - Level 3 Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technologies (BTEC)
- Year 2 – Day release at BCoT - Level 3 Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technologies (BTEC)
At the Workplace – Throughout apprenticeship (36 months)
- A work-based E-Portfolio comprising of a variation of evidence that meet the KSBs
- 20% off-the-job training record (agreed by the employer and Training Provider)
- Learning hands-on skills on workplace, testing, calibrating equipment, or advising on engineering or manufacturing problems. Fault finding and conducting route cause analysis.
Support and Guidance
From day one of your apprenticeship, you will be allocated a Training Consultant from BCoT who will support you, set targets and conduct progress reviews throughout your programme, you will also have a Technical expert assigned to you who will visit your workplace and assess your competence and knowledge over the course of the apprenticeship. They will support you with your e-portfolio and prepare you for your EPA.
The End Point Assessment (EPA) is an independent final assessment, taken at the end of the apprenticeship. For this standard, there are 3 assessments;
- Assessment method 1 - work-based report with presentation and questioning
- Assessment method 2 - interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
The result from each assessment method is combined to decide the overall apprenticeship grade. Pass, Merit, Distinction.
- Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician
- Level 6 Control Technical Support Engineer
- Level 6 Electrical/Electronic Technical Support Engineer
- Level 6 Product Design/Development Engineer
