The course provides the opportunity to develop practical skills needed by employers in the industry, whilst giving the learner a 'taster' of a variety of trades before choosing to progress into further learning in a specific trade.

  • 102 - Introduction to construction industry (3)
  • 002 - Constructing housing joint
  • 103 - Constructing through mortise and tenon joints

City & Guilds offers several qualifications in Construction Skills, ranging in size and complexity from Awards to a Diploma. The primary purpose of this is to ensure that learners and employers have options and flexibility in the choice of skills required – no construction project is entirely the same, and the complexity of projects can vary from extremely simple to extremely complex, as such the skills needed for the job can vary greatly. As a result, the sector often faces significant challenges in terms of staff recruitment and retention, particularly as it can take several years for an individual to become fully competent in a trade. It is also reflective of the diverse abilities of learners that wish to work in the sector.
At Level 1, our Health and Safety unit becomes mandatory, to ensure you are beginning to learn how to work safely in construction. You are likely to choose the Level 1 Extended Certificate if you have no previous experience or skills using construction hand tools, and you wish to learn between five and seven tasks commonly undertaken in the construction industry, possibly to gain employment working on a particular construction job in a particular trade area, but more likely to decide if you wish to continue to further study in construction trades. The Level 1 Extended Certificate offers you the opportunity to study several more complex tasks, which will give you an understanding of what is required to progress through to becoming a tradesperson. You are also able to begin specialising by taking more units from one particular trade area. Alternatively, you may not have made up your mind, and you are able to study units from several different trade areas.

Assessment Methods:
Candidates must:
• successfully complete one assignment for the mandatory unit
• successfully complete one assignment for each chosen additional units

Assignments will based on a learners theory knowledge and practical skills.
Learners will be able to progress onto the Level 2 NOCN Multiskills qualification, a City and Guilds Technical Certificate in a specific construction discipline or onto a Standard (Apprenticeship).
