Course Introduction

Institute of Apprenticeships Reference Number: ST0572

Sales executives are responsible for selling a specific range of products or services to customers. They maintain existing customer accounts and also build relationships with potential customers to generate new business.

Sales Executives operate in organisations of all sizes across all sectors and markets, including Technology, Media, Pharmaceutical, Recruitment, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Utilities and the Automotive Sector. Typical job roles and job titles include Sales Consultant, Sales Specialist, Sales Advisor, Sales Representative, Business Development Executive, and Field Sales Executive.

A Sales Executive will develop customer relationships by establishing rapport and building trust and confidence in their own and their organisation’s capabilities through demonstration of detailed product knowledge, competitor knowledge and an understanding of the market in which they operate, and by ensuring a positive customer experience.

The standard follows a set of knowledge and skills criteria and will help you develop your skills in:
  • Organisation, product, service and sector knowledge
  • Market and customer knowledge
  • Customer and financial acumen
  • Sales planning and preparation
  • Customer engagement and management
  • Customer needs analysis
  • Gathering intelligence
  • Time management
  • Presenting solutions, teamwork and collaboration
  • Negotiation skills
  • Digital skills
There are no standard entry requirements for this apprenticeship, employers will set their selection criteria.

If an apprentice is aged 16-18 and has not previously achieved the required level of English and maths, they will need to complete Functional Skills as part of their apprenticeship programme.

While Functional Skills are no longer mandatory for adult apprentices (19+), literacy and numeracy skills remain essential for success.

For those without prior English and Maths qualifications, we recommend level 2 maths and level 2 English to support career growth and workplace efficiency.

Our tailored support ensures these skills are seamlessly integrated into the apprenticeship journey, helping every apprentice develop these vital skills.
This course is assessed through ongoing assignments throughout the programme, leading to the externally assessed End-point Assessment (EPA).

Aspiral Learning at BCoT assigns a designated Business Trainer to each apprentice. Alongside the apprentice and employer they will agree on a personal learning and development plan, setting a timetable of learning activities in preparation for the End Point Assessment (EPA).

The Business Trainer will meet with the apprentice regularly either online or face to face to complete and review assessments, provide further coaching where required and agree the next steps of learning.
Achievement of the standard meets the eligibility requirements for Sales Certification at Level 4 with the Institute of Sales Professionals (ISP).
