FIND A COURSECourse Introduction
The purpose of this qualification is to increase learners' knowledge and understanding of common childhood illnesses to enable them to support the development and well being of infants and children they support or care for.
In this qualification, babies and young children refers to an age range
of 0-5 years old.
There are three mandatory units to be achieved to complete this course:
- Unit 1 Understand how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children - The aim of this unit is to explore ways to minimise cross infection and maintain a safe and hygienic environment for babies and young children
- Unit 2 Understand common childhood illnesses - The aim of this unit is to support learners to recognise when a child is unwell, and common childhood illnesses that may occur. Learners will also consider the policies and procedures relating to unwell children in an early years setting
- Unit 3 Understand health emergencies and specific conditions in an early years setting - The aim of this unit is to consider the role of the practitioner in relation to common accidents and basic first aid as well as serious illness requiring emergency support. Acute and chronic health conditions including how to manage allergies in the setting will also be covered.
To complete this distance learning course at no charge you will need to match the following entry criteria:
- Are a resident of the EEU (European Economic Area) and have been for at least 3 years
- Will be undertaking your learning within England
- Are aged 19 or above
- There are no formal entry requirements for this course but you will need to have a good standard of English and maths
- Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study.
- We recommended allowing a minimum of 5 to 6 hours per week to study this course in your own time.
- You will be given submission dates for each unit to help you stay on track and complete within the allocated timeframe of 6 months.
- This course is delivered through online assessments and online learning materials.
- You are required to study the learning materials online and then answer the knowledge based assessments confirming your understanding of the topics.
- We encourage learners to reflect on their own experiences, work based or personal and include these within their answers where relevant and suitable.
- This is a level 2 qualification, answers should be formed in paragraphs and learners will be required to write in detail, using structured sentences demonstrating knowledge.
Learners that achieve this qualification may wish to progress onto:
- Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health
- Level 2 Certificate in Children & Young People Mental Health
- Level 2 Certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
- Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Distressed Behaviours in Children
