Course Introduction

Skills England Reference Number: ST0608

By learning the fundamental accounting principles and the building blocks of the modern accountant, this apprenticeship is ideally suited for individuals with no prior knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping. In addition to understanding the basics of bookkeeping, apprentices will develop and apply essential skills and behaviours relevant to their daily roles. Apprentices will also sit the exams to gain the AAT Certificate in Accounting.

This isn't just about getting a piece of paper; this certificate gives you the solid, technical skills you need to be an effective accounts assistant from day one.

This qualification delivers a strong foundation in finance. You'll learn the core mechanics of how money moves in a business:

  • Double-Entry Bookkeeping: You'll master the basic principles of bookkeeping, which is how every transaction is recorded.

  • Costing Basics: You'll be introduced to basic costing—understanding how to track what things cost the business.

  • The Ledgers: You'll get your head around the essential records (known as ledgers) for purchases, sales, and general accounts. You'll know exactly where every invoice and payment belongs.

The qualification is also designed to set you up for success in the modern workplace by focusing on key professional themes:

  • Ethics: Understanding the rules and professional standards you need to follow when handling money.

  • Technology: Learning how to use the latest digital tools and software that accountants use daily.

  • Communication: Developing the vital skills to clearly explain financial information to others.

  • Sustainability: Getting an introduction to how financial decisions affect environmental and social goals.

  • GCSE English and maths (or equivalent).

If you haven't achieved these, don't worry—you may be able to work towards them as part of your training.
You can't start the final assessments until you hit the 'Gateway' requirements. Before you get to this point, you must have:
  1. Employer Approval: Your boss has to confirm you are competent and ready to do the job properly.
  2. GCSEs Sorted: You must have your English and Maths qualifications (in line with the rules).
  3. Qualification Modules Passed: You need to have passed the main learning modules of your mandatory professional qualification - the AAT Level 2 Certificate.

Your EPA is made up of two separate assessments that combine to give you your final apprenticeship grade.
  1. The Interview (Non-Integrated) - A structured chat with an independent assessor (not your boss or trainer) that lasts about 60 minutes. You can score a Fail, Pass, or Distinction on this part.
  2. The Knowledge Test (Integrated) - This is a test, often computer-based, where you answer questions in a controlled environment. You can score a Fail or Pass on this part.
You are now fully qualified and ready to take the next step in your finance career!
Once you've passed your level 2, you're set up for career progression.

Your next move could be a higher-level apprenticeship, such as

Or in a role in industry such as

  • Assistant Accountant
  • Business Administrator
  • Data Technician
  • Paralegal (if you want to move into Legal Finance)

It’s a recognised qualification that will open doors in any size of business, from local firms to global companies.
